Croeso i'r Dosbarth 5!

The Year 5 Teacher is Mr Beynon

Our Topic this term is 'Our Heritage'

In this topic we will be learning what life in Wales was like in Victorian times and when mining was the main industry in Wales. We will be continuing with our International project 'My Place, Your Place, Our Place' and looking at the heritage of Romania, Turkey and Spain where 5 lucky children from the class recently visited Romania. We also had a go at being miners in Rhondda Heritage Park. As well as swimming in the International Pool in Cardiff Bay. What a busy but exciting term!

We had a visit from Keep Wales Tidy and learnt all about plastic pollution

Our Topic in Autumn Term wass ‘Earth and Space’

We are excited to be learning about all things earth and space. The childre have chosen what they want to learn this term.

Below is a list of things they want to learn in each area of learning.

Literacy, Language and Communication and Welsh

Reading Texts- Cosmic by Frank Cottrell Boyce

Writing Genres – Informal and formal letters, formal letters, diary entry, persuasive poster, book review, finishing off a story and newspaper reports

Cymraeg- Hamdden. In these topics we will be writing poster, blogs dialogues and diaries all based around Hamdden.

Mathematics and Numeracy

We will be learning:

Temperature
Speed
Multiplication and division
Length

Area and Perimeter

Time

We will also be reading the book ‘Alien Odd and Alien Even’ where we will be doing reasoning activities based on this book.

Please learn common times tables with your children as knowing them will help in all aspects of mathematics

Context Work

The children have decided that in each new Area of Learning we will learn:

Humanities (History, Geography and RE): MYOP project. We will be looking at the culture and traditions of Wales, Spain, Romania and Turkey with a potential trip to Romania for 5 pupils later on in the year. We will also be looking at the country of Japan to celebrate the rugby World Cup being held there.

Expressive Arts (Music, Art, DT and creative movement): Planet art, creating a planet, design a rocket and astronaut portraits. We have also been working with Charlie from UPBEAT music to create a sequence of anti gravity movements. Have a look at the amazing movements below!

Science and Technology (Science and ICT): Plan and undertake a range of investigations based on Space. Collaborate on lots of creative projects using a range of apps and on Hwb using Google classroom.  We will be looking at the space race, moon landing, solar system, the moon and earth and looking at Tim Peake and The Apollo 11 crew. Children  will also be doing a project to create their own video game using Scratch.

Health and Wellbeing (PE and PSHE): We will look at pollution and its effects, typical astronaut diet and doing fitness tests similar to those of astronauts!

School Council

The children in Class 5 selected Dylan and Tavie to be their school council representatives this year. Very good choices who will make sure their voices are heard in making decisions in school.

P.E. Days

Every Monday and Friday we will be doing PE so please remember your kit on these days!

Depending on the weather we intend to do the 'Daily Mile' challenge where learners run/walk a mile every day. Children do not need kit for this just a comfy pair of shoes or trainers!

Big Maths

Year 5 were lucky enough to be the first class in Trowbridge to start using Big Maths online and we love it. We do the challenges every week and we try to beat our score from the week before. Keep an eye out for a list of children who have achieved their best ever score and those who come home with a special Big Maths certificate!

Being Ethical, informed citizens of the world

In Year 5 we are ethical and informed citizens of the world. Not only have we been researching the traditions of Wales, Romania, Turkey and Spain we have also been researching information about Japan and comparing and contrasting it to Wales. As part of our temperature work we have also been comparing average temperatures from countries in Europe and using the BBC weather website to find the temperature in Cardiff for the week and the hottest and coldest place in Britain.

We learnt the phases of the moon using Oreos.

We asked if we could learn why the moon changes shape all the time. Mr Beynon told us the moon has 8 different phases. He then showed us a bag with 18 packets of Oreo biscuits in. That is over 250 biscuits!! We then took the top of Oreos off and scraped off the cream to make the shape of all the different phases of the moon. We had great fun, learnt a lot and got to eat some biscuits as well!

We had Katie from ‘Show Racism the Red Card Wales’ in to talk to us about Islamaphobia. We learnt so much and had some really interesting discusisions!
We also went to different parts of the school to measure the temperature. We made predictions on which part of the school would be the coldest part of the school and which would be the warmest part of the school. Unsurprisingly the playground was the coldest!

Being creative

In Year 5 we love being creative whether it is dancing or painting!

We painted our own solar system. Some of the planets looked amazing!

Here we are making our anti gravity creative movements with UPBEAT music!

This is our performance of our creative movement piece which we did in front of Year 6. Big diolch to Charlotte fro, UPBEAT for working with us for 7 weeks

Thank you UPBEAT for teaching us how to play the Taiko Drums!

These children gave presentations on why they deserve to visit Spain. The class voted for who they think should go

We had a great day at Cardiff Castle learning what it was like in the Blitz in World War 2

As part of building blocks week we had to see who could make a container to hold the most jelly beans

We love using ICT in Year 5. Here is us using the school VR Goggles!

We were really lucky to learn First Day skills. We are now all have first aid qualifications!
